The main issue I have with this book is that I almost got whiplash from jumping from chapter to chapter. SO MUCH happens in such a short time you get no time to process it - especially in the last quarter when all of a sudden (at least that's what it felt like) Lo
is completely infatuated with Lev, wants to join and defend the Unity Project and doesn't question the fact that her sister isn't even in the Unity Project anymore. I understand that people can get sucked into cults really quickly, but with her it was a 180-degree change in what felt like days
.

I don't know, in comparision to Sadie this was such a letdown.

Just once I'd love to read a book about someone who is pulled into a cult that the founder/leader doesn't care about. It seems like in every one of these stories, our protagonist is irresistible to the cult leader, and while I know that they're trying to draw them in and make them part of a "family" I just can't imagine that it happens to every person.

Anyway, the plot was fine. I'm still not sure why some things were relevant, but it was decent. This felt like it was weirdly caught between being YA and being an adult book. I feel like being YA just held it back from being a bit more fleshed out, and I wish Summers had just written it as a general novel, rather than YA.

This book was... disappointing. I listened to the audiobook which was well done but really ended up disliking every single character. Lo had promise in the beginning when she was so desperate to find her sister and expose the Project but very quickly lost that integrity and ended up doing everything she was angry with her sister for, and hated the Project for. Pacing felt off, especially when Lo goes from angry to complacent. It felt instant, with little to no reasoning behind her switch. The ending was so predictable that it was almost painful. The writing was decent and it did feel suspenseful enough to finish, and honestly Lev was a very compelling character, but this book wouldn't win any awards from me.
