Michelle St. James has mastered the art of writing about men who operate in the shadow world, the ones responsible for keeping the wheels turning in ways that most of us choose not to see. In FIRE WITH FIRE, Michelle introduces us to Damian Cavallo, the man chosen by the members of the worldwide Syndicate to help bring New York back into the family.

Like others of Michelle's men, Damian has a complicated past. Determined to right the wrongs perpetrated by his father, he lives a powerful and solitary life. With the dissolution of the New York Syndicate, many vie for their piece of the city, but only one man can ultimately be called boss, and Damian is just the man to do it.

Aria Fiore wants nothing to do with the mafia life. Caught in the crossfire of the rivalry between her brother and Damian, she only knows that she feels an inexplicable and fierce pull towards the man that is her brother's sworn enemy. When war becomes inevitable, Aria makes the only choice that she can.

FIRE WITH FIRE is an excellent start to a new series, and one that I enjoyed very much. The characters are well written, and the connection between Damian and Aria is strong and tangible. I may be one of the few readers that doesn't mind a cliffhanger (yes, that's as much a spoiler as you'll get from me), because it just means that there's more to look forward to. I can't wait to see what's ahead for Damian and Aria, and recommend this 4.5-star read for fans of Michelle and those that like a good mafia read.
