Adorable vintage fairy tales

Very cute fairy tales all involving dragons. I love the sass of old vintage children’s books and this one has the ring of Winnie the Pooh to it.
Probably best for 5-9 year olds
Very fun!

Delicioso e completamente divertido.

Granted, it has been a long time since I've read this book, but I used to read it over and over in Middle School. If you like British people and dragons (with a cockatrice thrown in for good measure), it's a good, light read.

E. Nesbit`s The Book of Dragons is a wonderful collection of eight imaginative, delightful and interesting dragon stories.

These fire-breathing fascinating short tales are not to be missed!

And the Blue Bird and the Butterfly sing and flutter among the lilies and roses of the Palace garden to this very day.

All of these stories have similar formulas.  A dragon needs to be vanquished, usually.  Some of the stories are better than others and were probably written at different times and compiled.  A mixed bag.

I saw other reviews talking about how important this author was in influencing other authors, like C.S. Lewis.  You can kind of feel that the Chronicles of Narnia has a similar vibe, but I honestly think they are written better than this.  This is the first E. Nesbit book I've read, to my knowledge, and it just didn't jive with me.  I like fantasy and dragons, but something about the writing style I just found annoying.  I think it may be a difference in humor, and the fact that it's written for children, in which she as the author addresses the reader sometimes in the stories.  Some of these interjections come off as a tad condescending maybe, as she's addressing you as though you're a kid.  I'll forgive it for that, since I was not the demographic it was meant for, but there are some scenes with unnecessarily long explanations, with seemingly no reason.  Even though it's a tiny little volume it took me days to finish because I found it dull.  I even started a new book to get me out of the slump I found myself in.

An example of the long explanation I meant:
"Excuse me," said the collector, "but have you such a thing as a needle about you - a very long needle?"  "I have a needle book," replied Jane politely, "but there aren't any needles in it now.  George took them all to do the things with pieces of cork - in the Boy's Own Scientific Experimenter and The Young Mechanic.  He did not do the things, but he did for the needles." "Curiously enough," said the collector, "I, too, wished to use the needle in connection with cork."  "I have a hairpin in my hood," said Jane.  "I fastened the fur with it when it caught in the nail on the greenhouse door.  It is very long and sharp - would that do?"

This whole scene is excessively long and worthless to the story.  Throw this whole paragraph in the bin.  What was the point of it?  There isn't any point.  It's just there to take up space.  There are other scenes like this as well, some more annoying than others.  There were aspects here and there that I liked, but overall, this wasn't for me.
