I must admite it: I read this book because I was forced to do it.But to whoever developed the Portuguese educational programe : THANK YOU SO MUCH.
This is quite honestly one of the most complex pieces of literature I've had the pleasure to read and I freaking loved it!
The first half of this novel is really heavy : Eça de Queirós stars introducing family history, a load of different and extremely complex characters all this while continually criticizing the Portuguese society of the time.
The second half is when it gets good. The main characteristics of the characters become really obvious and the critic clear as water. The plot intensifies and we get to see tons of my favorite character(yeah you guessed it: João da Ega).
But what made this novel perfect in my opinion was the last chapter. The way every single character was wrapped up was at the very least genius. When João and Carlos looked back at all of their mistakes and concluded that the moral of their own lives is that nothing is worth running for ("not love, not money, not glory and not power") that was very hopeless but then they kept running.Even though they knew it was worthless they kept running, they kept living and that was so beautifully full of hope, not only for the changing country that was Portugal at the time but for life in general - and that is the most powerful passage I've yet to read.
To Eça de Queirós I have only one word to say : BRAVO!
