Well, it took weeks to get through this as fascinating as was the writing. I comprehend the reservations of Daniel J. Boorstin who wrote the foreword and George F. Kennan who wrote the introduction while trying to retain a sense of the time period from which Custine wrote. It’s fascinating to read how similar the Russia of the 1830s was to communist Russia and easy to understand why the revolution occurred. How the character of its people, their expectations, and both styles of government managed to be exactly the same.

Think de Tocqueville in Russia. Probably not of interest unless you are really into Russian studies. But, the descriptions of the russians are dead on--they are long suffering and, ironically, least likely to "rise up".
