This is a very moving collection of autobiographical stories and pieces that could be fictional or passed along from others. The beginning section of the book tells the author's story, and then it shifts into stories featuring others. There was no explanation for the change that I saw, so I'm not sure if these are stories that are biographical in nature, or more along the lines of fable. Regardless, the collection was a very enjoyable (and often poignant) read, with some eye-opening glimpses into what life was like in the Indian Schools.

I thought there would be more stories, but the end of this version had an essay that didn't really fit with the rest of the novel. I think this would have been a better read for me if it had been a class read with discussion.

Really enjoyed the 2/3s of this that I read. Particularly her description of her childhood, and her resistance to hair shingling and turnips. I wish there were greater exploration of the pull of modernity--clearly it upsets and repels her even as it attracts. So much loss which she conveys. So many lovely photos of her...wonder if anyone's written on this!

My Booktube
This is a collection of her own biographical accounts, short stories, as well as poetry.
The information she gave on her own life was very insightful and I liked that it was basically separated into childhood/teenager/adulthood. She was also a very good poet, as well as a great short story writer. It is just a shame we don't have more of her writings because there was a lot of talent in her.

Favorites of the short stories/poetry:
The Soft-Hearted Sioux
The Trial Path
A Dream of Her Grandfather
Iris of Life
A Sioux Woman's Love for Her Grandchild

‘Tis glimpses of this grand rainbow,
Where moments with good deeds unite,
That gladden many weary hearts,
Inspiring them to seek more Light.
