Delightful, charming, festive, heartwarming, and full of Maud’s sweet writing, and sweeter stories. I wasn’t familiar with most of these short stories - except for the two featuring Anne Shirley. This would be a great one to read every year during the holiday season!

These stories by L.M. Montgomery are sweet, charming, and heartwarming. It looks like I read this 10 years ago, and while they weren't memorable enough to make me remember reading them the first time, they are worthwhile, especially at Christmas time.

Every Christmas season I pull this out and read it again. It starts with the famous tale of Anne Shirley receiving her first fashionable dress as a Christmas gift from Matthew. Never fails to make me sniffle. Most of Montgomery's short stories are sweet, predictable and romantic, but full of all the things that Christmas is supposed to be about. Big hearts, family, good food, rich feeding the poor, generosity, winter weather, forgotten feuds and forgiveness etc etc. I love it.

4.5 The stories were cute and heart warming and I always enjoy Montgomery's writing style. However, the stories did seem to become repetitive after a while.

2.5 A sweet, charming collection set in Green Gables.
With very little Anne to my liking though.

A wonderful collection of different Christmas stories. Some of them felt very similar to each other with the basic plot structure/theme.

These are really cute short stories, most of which have a great moral lesson about helping those who are less fortunate at Christmas time. This would be great to read to a child and teach them the spirit of Christmas. A fast read at 200 pages.

I thought this was a bit weaker overall than many of L.M. Montgomery's short story collections (except for the two Anne excerpts) but still a fun trip in to a long-neglected, much-loved world.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I'm a big fan of L. M. Montgomery, and although I'm not normally keen on short stories, this collection may well have got me hooked. I haven't had much time to read this month but I was able to snatch a story from this book here and there. Because I read them individually I was able to enjoy them more, and wasn't so aware of the repetitive themes in the stories. If you appreciate that the stories were written over many years and not intended to be read all together then these are very sweet, heartwarming stories that really get you in the mood for Christmas. I will admit that they were very simplistic and sometimes the "happy ending" was a little unbelievable, but being an old-fashioned romantic at heart I'd give this collection 9/10 - just remember not to read all of the stories at once; they're much better when they're drawn out and savoured.

While these stories were sweet and very heartwarming for the season, I was a little annoyed because the majority of the short stories are not about Anne at all - and the ones that are about her are not stories at all but chapters from two of the books in the Anne series. I was expecting a set of tales set in Green Gables at Christmastime featuring Anne and her friends.

Of the remaining stories that were not Anne related (most of them) they were fairly formulaic and fell into two main categories:

1) A wealthy person helps out someone less fortunate

2) two feuding family members forgive each other

While I liked the first couple of stories in this theme, I got sick of it after a while because all of the stories were repetitive and almost identical.

The stories about Anne were the best. Also - I wanted more Gilbert!

Overall the stories were sweet, but the repetitive themes and lack of Anne as a character ultimately have me thinking this collection is just okay. 2.5 stars.
