This book is actually better than I thought it was going to be. Personally, the dialogue was the best part of the book because it seemed more like a play. There were times where things got a bit dry. But, overall the story was great and full of drama.

Massively ahead of its time. Wonderful to read with a 21st century vision. Don’t love the kind of fantastical element to it.

It’s classic Hawthorne, so 150 pages of long-winded descriptions and musings for every 50 pages of plot (plot mostly at the end). But the payoff was worth it, for me (though if you had asked me BEFORE page 150 I would’ve been much more negative). Overall I’m glad I read this, the themes are interesting. “Pearl” being what cost Hester everything killed me.
I wish we knew how this romance came to be, but alas, I suppose that’s not really the point.

I would have given this one five stars, were it not for the interminable introductory section. Let's hope Hawthorne's next effort opens at a more lively pace!
