"Cookie the uncrumbled." I thought it was fun and campy but then it got a bit bored towards the end
I DNF’d this book at about 65% of the way through. It was so hard to even get that far. The book is boring. Very much a slow burn enemies kind of thing going on but the story to me is a little weird. Hardly any world building so it is hard to wrap your head around what the world is like in the book and the magic system(s). Not a fan and just wasn’t my thing, if you likes it then that’s okay too!

I expected a better execution of the intriguing plot and was a little disappointed it fell flat. I absolutely love the huge revelation and angst that comes with a big betrayal, but this did not have that. I kinda expected a bigger reaction to all the truth bombs dropped in the story, and there were plenty, so I was a bit disappointed when they were just brushed over.
I did find the dialogue to be cringey and cheesy, at first I found the plot compelling enough to push through it, until the story started to decline. Once Chantel and Kaysar actually got together, I got progressively more bored with the story. Chantel was so hot and cold it was annoying, I found all her differing personalities to be kind of confusing. I couldn’t get a handle on her personality and I still have no idea what she was truly like. I also really despised her jealousy over Kaysar’s own sister all because of her ridiculous insecurities. Kaysar was so dramatic when it came to Chantel, he honestly was starting to give me the ick. I find it hard to believe that the supposed “Unhinged One” who was seen as this terrible, horrible, violent king would fall in love so quickly and become such a sap even if he was her mate.
Overall the story was a bit too chaotic, there were things that weren’t elaborated on that left gaping holes in the plot and left me feeling unfulfilled. I also think it dragged on for too long and should’ve ended a good 100-200 pages back.

The vibeb fluctuated from very serious to absurdly silly and campy, and not in a good way. I could have easily loved a tortured bad boy, but Kaysar just comes off as a dick with no redeeming qualities. And Cookie isn't really likable either :(
4.25 Stars
Kaysar has only lived for vengeance for centuries. After being subjected to horrors and being taken from his little sister, he can think of nothing else but wreaking havoc on his enemies. Enter Cookie. She has a weak heart and has made peace with dying, but then she gets the chance at a new heart. A fae heart. Sucked into a portal, Cookie drops right into Kaysar's devious plans. Things only get complicated from here.
I always love a good Gena Showalter book. She is a wonderful author, and I've read most of her books

Amazing
Yet another amazing story from Gena Showalter. She never fails to create a vibrant world full of wonderful characters. The witty banter always makes me laugh out loud. I cannot wait to see what else happens in Kaysar and Cookies world. Of course I must know who Pearl Jean finds as her love!!

As a romance reader, I'm offended.
I cannot believe I read the entirety of this. A little tip- don't make your heroine a Twitch streamer and gamer if you haven't played a video game in 20 years. Gena Showalter, what on Earth were you thinking?

I loved where Gena Showalter was going with this new fae world and the characters she created, and I look forward to reading more characters from this world. The characters are all dark, twisted, and ruthless in their own ways. Kaysar is a character that you either love or hate. When I read his POV, it was mostly about getting his revenge on the Frostlines. Just remember, he has endured trauma and misses his little sister terribly. He wants to know what happened to her because he feels like he failed her. Kaysar fights off his feelings for Cookie in the book many times but losing her takes him to realize how he truly feels for her. Cookie will not make it easy for Kaysar, which is why I adored her character.
Standalone or Part of Series: It’s part of the Immortal Enemies series, and I would recommend reading it in order.
Trope(s): Enemies to Lovers
Would I recommend this book? Yes. If you enjoy Paranormal Romance, I would recommend this book to you. It does have one of my favorite tropes, Enemies to Lovers. The series name is Immortal Enemies, so I’m assuming the series will have the trope in each book. Sign me up because I can’t get enough of this trope. Gena Showalter has been a favorite author since I read her Alien Huntress and LOTU series. I cannot get enough of this author’s books and will always recommend her books/series to readers who enjoy PNR/UF like I do. =)
