This is an impressive story, and the sort of gem I may never have picked up if it hadn’t been recommended. It lists frequently between harrowing narrative and snoozy detail about rowing dynamics, but Brown’s sweeping portrayal of the world in the early 1930s, the simmering darkness of the Third Reich’s inchoate years, and the grief-inducing poverty of the Depression era, all gather neatly into an engaging read. The last fifty pages alone are breathless.

Despite knowing how it ended in the very start of the book, I kept finding myself so caught up in wondering whether they would make it through a given obstacle or race. I had to keep reminding myself that I knew the ending.

Audio book read by Edward Hermann was beautiful
informative inspiring slow-paced

I listened to the audio book. It was a tad slow for my audio listening abilities and I would miss decent sized portions while multitasking.
This is one I might come back to read a print copy, and get a better glimpse to the story.
It was fascinating learning the life story of some of these boys, and what life lessons they learned as they rowed.
