I loved this book. It had me weeping in the bathroom at work toward the end, but in a "This is so beautiful way." I kind of wish I'd had something like this when reading Grapes of Wrath in high school. This book is the best historical novel that I've read to help me understand what it was like to live during the great depression. The sports parts were engaging and I was rooting for the boys the whole time, while also getting an idea of what it was like in Nazi Germany in the 30s. Highly recommend. Thoroughly enjoyed it, and the narrator is great.

Such a good inspiring story. Was less emotional than I expected but was more a historical account than a first person narrative so that makes sense. I see why so many people love this. Fun to read by a lake
I was not expecting to enjoy this book as much as I did. Wow, so enjoyable!!
This was a wonderful book. Learned a lot about the sport of rowing. It was fast paced and included many historical references.
Really nice historical piece. Probably closer to a 4.5. A tad long-winded at times but not terribly so. Does a nice job of exploring the concept of individual vs team.

Excellent book about the rowing crew from the University of Washington and their journey to the 1936 Olympics. Following the life and trials of Joe Ranz during the Depression in Washington state, the author gives a clear picture of the young man, his journey, and development during a tough time in our history. The author mixes in the events in Germany that lead up to the Olympics and those that are in power during that time.

I read 'The Boys in the Boat' by Daniel James Brown and gave it five stars. It's on numerous best book lists and was also a chapter in the book 'The Admiral's Bookshelf'. The number one New York Times best-selling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany, the inspiration for the PBS documentary The Boys of '36, broadcast to coincide with the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 80th anniversary of the boys' gold medal race. Very well-written and thoroughly researched, it was an enjoyable read.
