This book has been on my TBR for so long and now I’m wondering why I waited so long. I am a total sucker for underdog sports stories so from that standpoint it doesn’t surprise me that I liked it so much. What does surprise me is that I didn’t find its many tangents off-putting because usually I would. Everything was there for a reason, giving context, and told in a compelling way. Really, this was just an excellent book. Aside - I listened to the audio version and I liked the narrator very much.
A detailed historical account of a group of boys and their immediate community overcoming adversity and odds to find sporting greatness during one of the hardest era of history - Great Depression, dust bowl and the lead up to WWII.
The second half of the book in my opinion was much stronger than the first.

Kept me reading but wasn't consumed by it. Inspiring story but could have gone deeper, not as entrenched in the German story as I thought it might be.
Inexplicably put this off for three weeks after deciding it was the next book I was going to read this year and then somehow read it in two sittings. I don’t know a thing about rowing but everything in here was gripping and urgent and tense in a way that just didn’t let me put it down. There’s also something grounding in the way that Brown presents these very high stakes personal quandaries only to make them feel microscopic in the larger context of the world at large just a few words later — everything is happening everywhere to everyone all of the time and the ability to zoom in and out on that displayed here is chilling.
Genuinely such a good book. Not just entertaining but also beautifully written. Was on the edge on my seat during the races and also learned so much

Slow for much of the book, but exciting ending. Enjoyed the narration by Edward Herrmann.
