More like 3.5. This was a convoluted read at times, but a really interesting exploration of what happens to the characters we create off the page.

The Impossible Fairytale unfolds in two parts. The first is dark and centres on Mia and the Child, who are in the same class. Mia has parents who seem to give her everything she wants while the Child suffers abuse and neglect. There is a lot of cruelty in this section, which can make for tough reading at times but the plot really moved along and held my interest. The second section became very meta with a teacher who is the author and a student who is the Child who somehow knows about the events of the first section which took place years earlier. This section explores the ethics of creating art and literature. It was less successful for me. I’m not a fan of surrealism and often felt lost and confused, never sure what was real and what was dream.
