Pink Is for Boys

Robb Pearlman

3.86 AVERAGE

What is set up to be a good message just comes off very binary. Every color is for everyone.

Pink is not just for girls, and blue is not just for boys, no colour is there for just one type of person. Vivid illustrations are what brings this book to life and I love the way that the colour being talked about is the main colour used in the illustrations that accompany it. Not one child in the book is bothered by the colour of something, they are more interested in the object/activity itself. That is a message that many people still don’t understand so by incorporating subverted stereotypes in children’s literature, those assumptions and generalisations can start to be removed, which is something that is starting to be written about more and more.

This book is included in PEN America's Index of Banned & Challenged Books and was generously donated by a friend as part of an initiative to distribute banned books to Little Free Libraries in my community.

It's becoming more and more apparent all the time that the people who chose these titles to try to ban have never actually cracked the spine of a book in their lives- not even a 30-page children's picture book. This one is literally just a compiled list of colors and how everyone can enjoy them because they encompass so many beautiful things around us. It's nothing to do with gender or gender identity whatsoever, but... ya know. 'Murica.

Anyway, this is a really fun picture book and I look forward to passing it on for a child to enjoy.

Beautiful and simple message with beautiful and simple illustrations. “Pink is for boys. And girls. And bows…” relaying that all colors are for everyone, and no such thing as “boy” colors and “girl” colors. My 6yo daughter now always shares that pink is also for boys and that her dad has a pink shirt. ;)

All the colours are for everyone. Very simple book that many adults need to read and learn from!!

2.5 stars

An excellent concept book that also smashes weird gender stereotypes. Fun read-aloud, lively illustrations. Highly recommended for ages 2-5.

Great book that teaches that colors are for everyone and not gender specific. A great message for preschooler through elementary kids.

Meh, this could have been a lot better.
