Early Lemire showing shades of brilliance yet a bit underdeveloped and unnecessarily rushed. The story itself is tragic and sad, but somehow not totally void of hope (this is Lemire's specialty.)

This is Lemire's first published work, and it shows. Very rough art, but as always, it works for him. He still shows glimpses of his cinematic eye. However, the story is too bleak for my tastes, and unlike his later work, the ending leaves nothing much to show for itself. On its own, it's a fairly compelling short story, though. His common theme of family and fathers has it's genesis here as well.

2.5 The earliest published work by Jeff Lemire, about maybe about the 4th book I have read by him. His art style isn't a smooth style to begin with even now, but this one is much more rough.
The story didn't really go as I expected it to, which is usually a good thing, but this time I expected a bit more than what i got.

The title had me nervous but this is not the Lemire where I’ve wept the most.

The art was weird, but the story was so bittersweet. It was more like a real life ending instead of a comic book ending.

I liked the red/white/black colour scheme and the harsh, heavy lines. The story was quite sad, but nothing about the plot or characters really managed to hook me; they were relatively predictable and stock. I'm interested in reading Lemire's later works, however, when he's refined his story-writing and art a bit.

Interesting as a first work, fun to see how writing/storytelling and artistic style has changed and developed.
