Gruesome murders of many women lead Lucas Davenport on a chase across Minnesota to find the man who keeps strangling women and putting them in the "Black Hole".

It always amazes me that people say that Stephen King is horrifing. He's a great writer (Revival being an exception to that rule) and can be scary, but for horror this story tops anything by Mr. King!

John Sandford's charcters are always great and nobody does a bad guy like him but he supassed himself with R-A! Wow! Hard to put this one down!

Sandford's novels have always been violently graphic, but lately they seem to be becoming even more so. Not sure I'll read any more...I found myself skipping over large swaths of this one to avoid the ugliness. I still like the mystery/detecting part of the book, just could do without the unnecessarily graphic portions. He should take a lesson from Hitchcock...what is unspoken and unseen is often more affecting than what is spelled out frame by frame. Still, Lucas saves the day, even though he is getting up in years, and familiar side characters make appearances.

Lucas Davenport (and Sandford) is back again and giving us another memorable crime thriller. This time Lucas is working for the BCA and gets pulled into an investigation when a young boy on the quest to lose his virginity has his afterglow interrupted by the very strong odor of decay. (teen hormones must be a powerful thing since he didn't notice it prior!) He goes home and tells his brother who is a sheriff and the next day they return to make a grisly discovery. Soon Lucas is doing what he loves best, hunting for a killer and searching for a monster who has been killing for years.
Most of these books deliver and are rarely a disappointment and while some are better than others, I feel this one is definitely on the high end.

Not my favorite book in the series since I did not particularly care for the plot and the graphic nature of the crimes. However, the last quarter of the book was very intense and absorbing. Listened to the audio version which was narrated by Richard Ferrone.

This was the first Sandford book I've ever read.... And I'm asking myself, "How have I missed this guy for so long!?" I'm just now getting into mysteries, and some are clearly better than others. This one was, in my opinion, a book I'd have read as a stand-alone.... regardless of the fact that it was a mystery. I mean, it was written VERY well, it grabbed my attention and kept a tight hold of it, and it was FUNNY! Not all the way through, definitely, but there were some seriously funny parts. I'm so pleased to have found this (as recommended by a co-worker, who heads up a mystery book club I've become part of), and I plan to read the rest of the books in this series!!!

Overall very good, but gruesome book. I had read the Virgil Flowers book where Matesson shows up and wondered about her story, so interesting to get the back story there.
