Great plot but Grotesque
It was a great book! Truly tapped into our natural human instinct to fear what we don't understand or know, despite all things that may be safe we automatically fear the unknown. Written in third person, was interesting for this storyline because I was automatically drawn to the protagonist. First scifi book that Ive read, and set the bar for the rest I'll read.

This was fantastic! A sci-fi book that is not about science and space ships but about humanity's weird-ass need to kill everyone else who doesn't look or act or think like us.

This book!! It was one of those reads that was at the back of my mind even while I wasn’t reading it. I finished this book in the middle of the night then couldn’t fall asleep because I couldn’t stop thinking about getting the next book and what I was going to discuss with my friend about Dawn. The Oankali were an intriguing species. They have such love and wonder surrounding humans, and their drive to help them regardless of whether or not those humans wanted to be helped. It mirrors the way humans right now feel about some animals on Earth (minus the mating aspect). Learning about them, their family units and the complex ways in which they bonded and communicated was my favorite part of this book. Lilith’s relationship with these aliens is also really interesting, she’s hardstuck in the fact that she’s human yet she’s so far from being a human at the same time. I’ll be going out today to buy more from this series as well as more Octavia Butler reads in general, I’ve never been able to pin point a favorite author but she may be becoming mine.
