Another good book from the Elm Creek Quilts series. In this book, two of the original Elm Creek Quilters leave Waterford and are joined by two newbies. The "winding ways" theme was a tad overdone, with pretty much every chapter mentioning these two words more than once. But a good story none the less. Great to get more background on all the characters

I liked learning about each of the quilters.

This may be the first audio book where I cried at the end.

Borrowed on Hoopla through JCPL.

Listening length 10 hr 16 min

You even get to liking the new characters Jennifer brings into the fold. She just really weaves an enjoyable story.

The Winding Ways Quilt by Jennifer Chiaverini
The new teachers are in place at the retreats. Love hearing all about their new techniques and how they are done.
Overlapping circles that curve symbolize the twisting paths others have taken.
This story has chapters by Sylvia/Andrew and Sara/Matthew who cook and she quilts before the quilting retreaters show up for their week long sojourn learning new things from others.
There are chapters from Gwen and Summer as their relationship changes.
Chapters from another founding member: Judy who will be leaving soon. The travel from one end of the state to the other is giving her problems to care for her mother and continue her work.
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

This book seemed to have little to no plot. The camp was marginalized in favor of character backstories, which made the whole thing lack cohesiveness. The book also did not seem to realize that backstory does NOT equal development. Sure, we could see where the character had been and what they had seen, but they didn't seem to have personalities. I didn't get any sense of emotion from any of them. Summer and Jeremy are supposed to be in love? Show me they're in love!! They don't seem to have any chemistry, and their relationship is never really shown, despite the fact they spend hours in a car together. They don't banter, they don't even seem affectionate toward each other beyond the occasional hand-holding. Backstory is NOT the same as character. It just gives you badly developed characters set in the past if you don't give the characters personality.

Besides all that, the dialogue seemed unnatural, the morals forced and generic, and the word choice repetitive and unexciting. This is my first taste of the Elm Creek Quilters, and based on this, I will not be returning.

I just finished this latest addition to the Elm Creek Quilts book - I love the way she dedicated each chapter to one character and their story, while still keeping them all involved in each others lives. Best one yet!

I can't imagine that anyone who isn't a quilter or interested in quiling would be drawn to this series. The latest in a series (and yes, I've read all of them) that has as its theme: everyone has trouble in their lives, but if all quilters stick together and support each other, we will survive. The quilt in the title serves as a rather in your face metaphor for the twists and turns in life. A little subtlety would be appreciated. A quick read. Enjoyable, but a tad preachy and predicable.
