this book made me sad. its beautiful. bennett definitely tells a story well. but i cant help but feel nadia was written in a certain sort of light for having an abortion. is it in the writing itself or in my own interpretation that has be feeling sad for her? that her life did not end up as full or happy due to this decision? i was even rooting for her and luke to find their way back together, hoping she would get pregnant again and choose to keep the child. that the friend would leave luke for the military man so nadia and luke could be together again. this ended in a more realistic way, but i did not like it

Listened to this after reading The Vanishing Half earlier this year, and liked this one even more. The characters and plot are so compelling without ever being forced or unbelievable, and the writing is wonderful. I thought the chorus of the church mothers really worked. I will be watching for another book from this author!

This book is about how a pregnancy and abortion affect two teenagers and the people near to them over the years. It's also about how we feel both separate and connected to our families, friends and communities, and of course how the absence and presence of mothers in our lives affect us. This book is set in my current home of Oceanside, which was fun for me.

How does one choice you make at a young age effect the rest of your life?
The secret you thought you’ve been able to keep hidden seems to continue demanding attention and showing up when you least expect it.
This book pulled me in from the first page, was lyrical and beautiful and demanded my attention, which I happily gave.
It tells the story of Nadia Turner, from her teenage years when making a difficult choice, throughout her early twenties and telling the heartbreaking story of how that one choice she made as a teenager stayed with her and how it changed her path and the path of those around her.
I loved the complexities of all the characters, they each had their own story to tell and their own reasoning and justifications. You may not agree with what they did but the author wrote in such a way that you understood why. Their stories were heartbreaking, real, and honest.
