It wasn't as profound as one would hope. Also faded between being engaging and interesting versus not so much. That said, it wasn't bad and it a good lesson in keeping humble and appreciating those who hold you up.

If you’re looking for a flashy, scandalous, celebrity gossip tell-all, this isn’t the memoir for you. This was a lot more personal about his childhood than I was expecting. I think he covered those early stories of his life well, but at the same time didn’t really dive as deep into the emotional aspects as much as I expected for a memoir covering such sensitive topics. There’s an odd juxtaposition with certain stories where it’s such personal details yet at the same time I don’t really feel like I actually learned anything about him. There were moments that felt incredibly authentic and vulnerable and then others that felt almost preachy and as if the focus was more on getting a good quote instead of just telling the story. I also expected this to be a bit more of a love letter to drag and the drag culture that launched his career, but instead I’m left feeling like he just did drag as a means to an end to reach his goal of fame. While I appreciate he doesn’t try to hide that, it’s hard to not feel a little bit disappointed there.

Overall I still found it to be an interesting read though and I’d definitely recommend the audio book version of this one.

I feel that this memoir was pretty surface level and kind of wanted it to go deeper but that is RuPaul’s decision. I enjoyed listening while reading. I felt that I had to power through to get to the end. Not bad but not great.

It's usually a great listen when the author reads the book themselves! I quite enjoyed this one, learning all about Ru's life and the different adventures and life events that brought him to where he is today.

My fave quote "Magic, I saw for the first time, was a choice - and it must be created."
