RuPaul's memoir is short and sweet. He talks about his childhood, his formative relationships, and the start of his career. I would have liked to know more about his career, but he focused on the early years. There are some real gems about personal growth in here. RuPaul reads the audiobook, and I enjoyed it immensely. He made it seem like it was just a chat. Definitely check it out if you're a fan.

So I don't really have a genuine rating for this. I was expecting to learn more about RuPaul and how he got to where he is today. I am not knowledgeable at all when the topic of drag queens are brought up. I'll admit the most I know is from the shows that are televised but I haven't watched just heard about through the grapevine. I feel like RuPaul was probably told by someone "hey while you are kinda sorta still relevant for another minute, write a memoir. Everyone is doing it." So it felt like he had an idea and executed it but still keeps parts of himself guarded from the audience. He's allowed to (no one should be forced to write about their entire history) if they don't want to but to me, I felt as if I didn't fully understand why and what motivated him to be in the drag world minus the fact that he's a gay, black man who didn't know what he wanted to pursue to make a living after the age of 18.

This personal history is delivered in such a RuPaul way. He relays traumatic memories with panache and a message. It’s giving, “Don’t worry, this is how I realized I was fabulous.” Everyone he meets either helps him toward becoming famous or hinders him but teaches him something. It’s disappointing how everyone is a footnote to his destiny, but I guess that aligns with the stories about RuPaul in person.

It was more like reading someone’s journal than a memoir. “I went here and did this and saw this person and we got high and then we went there and I realized this.” I suppose that reflects what it’s like to be in your party years, but much of the book would’ve benefited from the intentional storytelling the first few chapters had.

It was so interesting to see this side of Ru. Like, I'm in my 20s, so to me RuPaul is cemented in my mind as a super rich, skinny, gorgeous queen. If you'd asked me before I read this, I would have probably told you Ru was born 26 years old and fully waxed. That's why a book like this really helps to make a celebrity back into a person. Hearing all the name dropping was super cool too because why did Ru know literally everyone??
Such a fun read!!
