This book was the perfect romance! It was a good mix up for me as I usually read fantasy and was looking for nice happy story! The book gave me a great story and was not as predictable as I anticipated it would be.

I have to admit it: I am positively surprised.
After two books of sexism and fragile male ego, I finally got a little bit more of that BUT WITH GOOD CONFLICT RESOLUTION.
Or as good as you can expect from a 00s novel and a 1800s society.
Does Benedict have flaws? Yes. Is he wrong most of the time? Yes. But you know what? He makes up for it by the end. In my eyes, at least. (Sure, I am making some concessions but, look, we get what we get here.)
And SOPHIE. Do not get me started!! And I mean this in the BEST of ways. She's lovely, she's kind, she's funny, she's sensible, she likes to take her fists out for a walk a bit too often for my taste but STILL. She's still, sadly, an innocent virgin (one cannot make it as a female protagonist in a Bridgerton book if one has experienced lust before meeting The Man), but her class/social awareness and strong convictions made up for it. (Am I, once again, making concessions? See above. Please and thank you.)
I ATE this book up, I admit it. It was interesting, charming, I never once got bored or annoyed in a way that I had to stop reading (I'm looking right at you, dear Daphne) and, despite its flaws, I can happily say that I liked it a lot.
Is my 4-star rating fair, given that I have rated other less problematic books the same way before? Probably not. But you see, I find myself in a toxic relationship with this saga. Every time, I know there is a HIGH chance I will be disappointed. And, every time, I come back to it with renewed hope and a positive spirit.
So, that being said... see you on the next one! :D

UPDATED REVIEW (2024)

Actually, I DID have to go deep in my review of this book. I reread this book after the 2nd Epilogue was added. The 2nd Epilogue gives Benedict and Sophie even more depth. This will sound like I’m making allowances for Benedict, the 2nd Epilogue gave me a new perspective: his ‘2nd son’ issues. To me this contributes to him being an asshat initially. Yes he was an asshat about asking Sophie to be his mistress while he pined for the masked lady. He did make a good point about who would protect her given he bailed her out of a situation. He did put her in a better situation vs. whatever the outcome would’ve been if he hadn’t happened upon her in dire straits. I’m giving my review an additional star.

1st review
This is a romance novel set in the 1800s. Benedict was an asshat but men were insufferable boors back then. Other than shaking the Cinderella vibe, I’m just enjoying the stories as they are without going too deep.

A Bridgerton version of Cinderella. A very, very different Benedict than the Netflix series. Overall, good but not my favorite of the series so far.

Still can't get over that her name is literally SOPHIA MARIA (Beckett), with green eyes and light brown hair. This girl is me. I HATE her stepmother so much. How can someone be so cruel for no reason. This book made me love Violet even more. She is so kind but also so fierce and strong when she needs to be. Lowkey, was annoyed by Benedict. He could not understand why a woman would not want to be his mistress. A woman in love would of course want more than that. She would want respect and true love. Not a consent king, but he learned I guess. This story is literally Cinderella but still entertaining. It's just so frustrating when people don't communicate, but lowkey I probably wouldn't either lol.

Not only was this one just another retelling of Cinderella, but I also could not get over all of the issues around consent.
