Being a big fan of Child 44, I went into this book hoping for another page turning thriller and for the most part I was not disappointed. My preference for reading is with plausibility, so initially I struggled with the concept of a mass population exodus to Antarctica. But I found the book fast paced and intriguing and can see the possibility of a movie adaptation.

A simple straightforward narrative which is easy to read and easy to get caught up in. Questions about what humanity is and survival at the cost of what it is to be human.

I love the premise, aliens appear in the sky and give humanity a very short window to escape to Antarctica. We are given the perspective of several people as they either race for the pole or prepare for certain death. The survivors must make a new society in the desolate landscape with almost none of the technology they are accustomed to. The story fails to deliver and has no real ending. It is possible there is a second book planned, but I am not invested enough to read it.
