This book took me places! It's unlike anything else I've read, a post-apocalypse tale that's entirely unique! I can't stop talking about it; I want sequels, I want a movie! I'm glad for the perspectives of several protagonists, I'm glad for the time jump, I'm glad for the non-traditional ending.

The first half was really good. Then the pacing becomes rushed and ummm hybrid humans are introduced and we end with an interspecies war ?

Overly ambitious.
The blurb had me really intrigued and as a fan of apocalypse/dystopia I had high hopes. Although this book isn't bad by any means, it disappointingly devolve into rushed side plots, the pacing is all over the place, and it's plagued with cheesy romances.
The plot itself is quite good, the race to get to Antarctica was gripping and the 20-year jump provided cool insights into how humanity could survive on ice. I wish we had focused more on the apocalyptic aspect, rather than the story of hope and resilience we ended up getting. Still, I was suitably entertained for the most part.
Unfortunately the painfully simplistic and one-note way Tom writes love (everyone falls in love at first sight without knowing anything about the other person) permeates all aspects of the story and kind of ruins the gritty, interesting concepts of survival on ice and genetic modification we had going on. Like I don't CARE about any of these people because we barely get time to connect with most of them, there's not enough time for all the world-building and side plots this book tries to squeeze in, why are we wasting precious pages on an unrequited love romance between 16 year olds?
Ultimately the plot is good but it's rushed, over-complicated and focuses on too much to give the ideas the space they deserve to develop. It's definitely set up to be a series but I probably won't pick up the second one.
