This is a book that should be part of a university course. Not that it’s dense or difficult to read- but because there are such incredible themes to discuss and write essays about. Survival, what does it mean to be human, community, love, genetics.
I’ll be thinking about this for a long time.

Science Fiction is usually a genre that I dip into very rarely and very, very carefully, for the simple reason that, in most cases, I feel overwhelmed and confused; this is caused by the sheer amount of information that comes with (most especially alien and military) understanding the technology, etc., that one feels one needs a degree in Rocket Science in order to understand half of the concepts...
But I made a goal for myself to read more Sci-Fi, so when the opportunity arose (I won a little contest) I chose this over the other books for this reason.
Even though this is about alien invasions and genetic enhancements, this book fascinated me, from start to finish and is filled with wonderful, mesmerising moments. The info dumps came in short bursts in the areas where they were needed but never so much as to completely overwhelm you. And though there is a big element of predictability to the storyline I feel the author executed it really well.
What can be confusing about Cold People is the timeline and how the story jumps between timelines and characters, but once I started to think of this as a movie, it made more sense.
This book has a little of everything:
- Multiple Extinction Level Events
- Alien invasion
- Genetic enhancements
- Dystopia/Utopia setting
-Incredibly atmospheric
-Human ingenuity and resilience
Again, this was a highly fascinating and entertaining read for me; if you love Sci-fi then this is definitely one for you.
I talk more about this book in this video on my channel if you're interested.

Girl meets boy, aliens invade while they are on their first date, everyone has 30 days to move to Antarctica or they will die. Then the story jumps 20 years and becomes about scientists in Antarctica splicing human and animal DNA to make a new species better suited to life in the cold. The alien invasion sets the stage for the story, and then they are never mentioned again. The time jumps are very jarring, and I think that’s because the author didn’t want to do the work of explaining how the colonies in Antarctica were actually set up. I won’t tell you how it ends, and you probably won’t find out because I’m not sure you’ll sit through the entire book. It wasn’t good, but was it the worst book I’ve ever read? No.
This novel was fascinating. The premise is incredible, but this isn't really an alien story. It's a story about mankind and the lengths that they will go to in order to survive.
The citizens of Earth have been invaded and have been given 30 days to evacuate to Antarctica, where they will now live. The story then focuses on several individuals and their paths to Antarctica and their roles once they arrive. 20 years in, everything seems settled, but an opponent arises and the people must once again band together to survive.
This book was so propulsive! It was a fun story with a creative premise. Do I wish we would have learned more about the aliens? Sure, but that's not this story. This story is a compelling look at mankind's will to survive, a cautionary tale about how far we should go scientifically, and a character study about what brings us together as people. I really enjoyed it. I do hope there's a second book because there's so much still to explore here!

Thank you to Netgalley, the author and publishers for the advanced copy and the chance to preview it.
I loved Child 44 and was keen to read this one although it's usually not my genre.
I really enjoyed it although I felt parts of it were a bit slow. it's the story of an alien invasion and the only place humans are allowed to live is Antartica. I was disappointed that we never heard anything about the aliens, what they wanted, why they allowed some human life to exist after they took over the world. I thought that was a big gap that could have been exploited. Definitely worth a read though!

Loved it. A slow start, for sure, but then the plot picks up quite rapidly. What a neat thought experiment and a cool idea, with characters and circumstances that seem quite plausible. Well done.
This book had the potential to be incredible. The exodus was the only good part. From there, it jumped back and forward, from this person to that. I am impressed by the volume of historical facts the auther has added, but alot of it just wasn't necessary.
I was waiting for something big to happen and it just didn't. Hard to finish. A whole lot of book for a whole lot of nothing.
