Excellent! It has been a realllly long time since I read the others, but this really is constructed in such a way that it does not matter. Super fun.

I fucking love this series so much and the fifth installment is probably my favorite so far. Like the third, it centers around two people's relationship. (Wonder if that has anything to do with my adoration of it. Unclear.)
Being exposed to Costis for an extended period of time again was reassuring. Being in Kamet's head was a joy, as was watching him navigate his circumstances and surroundings. I'm very weak for characters used to existing in a certain framework or system that are then made to survive outside it. Especially if that system has exploited and been abusive toward them. (There's just something about watching a person be deeply perplexed and distrustful of another's kindness, amirite?)
Can't wait for the next book.

P.S. They're queer, Your Honour.

Really 3.5 stars, but I always round up! Won't say much here so as to avoid spoilers, but I found that too much of this dragged with travel. It did set up whatever comes next well, though, and I do look forward to continuing this series!

I was looking for an book with adventure (to cure my wanderlust, of course), and it delivered.

It took me a while to get into the story, either due to the long chapters or maybe just my reading style. But once I was hooked on Kamet and the Attolian’s trek, I was enthralled by the adventures they had.

Let's just say I'm glad a bunch of strangers on the internet convinced me to finish this series.

Finished in a few hours of reading before and after work today. A quick, bright, and refreshing story. Some familiar characters, but a new and satisfying narrator perspective and a good conclusion to the series. I am sorry there isn't more to read after this.

This one might be my second favorite (after king of attolia). Kamet and Costis are ridiculously lovable. this book very much gives “the thief” (book 1) but better and more proficiently written. It also brings up some poignant questions the similarities and differences between slave and soldier.

It’s been amazing seeing Costis from another perspective as well. In this book we really get to see his charismatic, competent, authoritative, good-hearted nature. Kamet is also wonderful to psychoanalyze. His character is so fully developed and so distinct from any other character we’ve seen this far.

Also, I don’t know if this is just me, but once you start reading with idea that it is a romance, its very easy to see it as such. I know they are probably just very good friends though

This book is also a very good set up for the
upcoming war (?) with the Mede.
Very excited to read the last (💔💔💔) book in the series!
