Jennifer McMahon continues her streak of writing excellent, creepy books. One a year is too few!!
This was frustrating because the whole thing wrapped up in the last couple chapters, and it just felt rushed. And for a while I was thinking oh maybe it's not the most obvious thing, and then it was. But the writing is good, and it is very evocative and creepy. I enjoyed it, but I would probably not read it again.
This book was fantastically written, but I had different expectations for the end...
Loved this spooky, but not gory, slow burn of a thriller. I rate mysteries/thrillers based on if I figure out what the plot twist is going to be before it’s revealed, and I couldn’t figure this one out!
This was a solid story to read at Halloween time. I enjoyed it. Recommend for some light spooky reading between weightier subjects.
While slow-moving at times, Jennifer McMahon's "The Night Sister" is an interesting, entertaining read, that leaves the reader wondering til the very end, "what exactly is going on here?" Did a young mother go crazy and kill her family, or is their something supernatural at work? McMahon's deft storytelling will tease you and have you careening between the possibilities until the story's conclusion.
I can still remember exactly where I sat and read this in one setting. It--and all her other stories too--messed me up. Couldn't be put down, I had to know what was happening. I couldn't stop. And I was properly horrified the whole time. Not let down in the slightest. Her books are a shining example of how to build tension and then deliver with a punch. You will not be disappointed, but I advise you do not start unless you have time to keep going because you will need to finish it.
I really loved the mother/daughter generational aspect of this book. However, I was looking more for a horror/thriller and this kind of morphed into a fantasy. Still, a good story by an author I have enjoyed in the past.
