2.5/5 stars - Not my favorite McMahon novel. It was weird, but also a bit boring in all the back and forth and gaslighting of literally every moment of lots of different family members. I got bored, but finished it expecting a different non-horror resolution.

I enjoyed the first 2/3 or so of this book, but then it started to unravel. It almost felt like the author couldn't decide where the book was going. I was enjoying it and wondering if maybe, Rose was actually crazy and that all of this mare stuff was in her head. Nope. She was the mare all along. Yuck. I felt like this book could've been so much better. I felt like it was going in so many different directions. I enjoyed her previous novels much more.
I have enjoyed other McMahon stories because she's just so darn page-turning. And yet I usually find her endings underwhelming and then get all dissatisfied. I think it's not a coincidence that books were less thriller and more horror. She does creepy well. I actually had a theory early which was wrong lol. I enjoyed the look back in time and found the switching natural which sometimes authors dont do well. I will continue reading McMahon books and I will remember its about the journey and not always about the ending.

I thought this book was pretty good. Probably a true 3.75 in my opinion. I thought the story line was good and enjoyed it for the most part.
