One Piece is such a fun book!
I didn't expect it for some reason, but this manga is essentially strictly a comedy, most of which worked really well for me. It is a bit listless, but is still a fun read that I had a good time with.
Romance Dawn starts with Luffy as a kid, idolizing a group of pirates that frequent his town. This eventually leads to him getting his straw hat, starting on his journey (ten years later) to become a great pirate, and meeting and recruiting Zoro while taking a corrupt ocean police force called The Marines.
There is a ton of slapstick comedy and cartoonish violence (the mentor character delivers a classic shonen line about protecting his friends after having his arm bitten off by a shark). Luffy's abilities, which seem very dumb, *are* dumb and Oda knows this and plays into it, which gives the reader permission to just have a good time in this wacky, cartoon world full of pirates made of rubber and swordsmen who fight with a third sword in their mouth.
Zoro himself is a great character, the classic manga archetype of "great swordsmen obsessed with becoming the best," and the reversal of him being the greatest pirate hunter won over to become a pirate on Luffy's crew plays really well. His name and look are a clear reference to the classic character, which adds a layer of absurdity to the character within this world.
I am incredibly impressed by Oda's use of the comics medium to have Zoro's fighting make sense. He cuts directly to him stopping three blows at once or attacking with all three swords, depending on the reader to fill in most of the action between panels. It is a great execution and means the action can be extremely cartoonish even though Zoro himself is played much straighter than Luffy.
Artistically, I am surprised by how much I like this book. The promotional images I have seen don't sell the world as well as the actual pages do, and the outrageous characters and story make the simplified (but expressive) art work really well.
One Piece is really good and I am excited to see where it goes from here. I was genuinely surprised by how much fun this manga is and how much I ended up liking it.

It was a fun read. I wanted to see the difference between the manga and the Netflix series, I appreciate that for the manga, Nami and Zolo are separated. Luffy is an interesting character, with an interesting dream. Zolo is the badass who is a sweetheart deep down and Koby is special. I like the Netflix version of Koby/Zolo/Luffy (the way he looks) a lot. Of course Nami is cool, I really appreciate her cunning nature. A great solid manga adventure with interesting characters.
