One Piece is, by a wide margin, the best selling manga of all time, and this is the one that started it. For the uninitiated, it's a pirate story, with the title referring to an elusive pirate treasure.
Predictably, the whole thing is nuts. The main character, Monkey D. Luffy (yes, that's his name), is a blissfully confident boy with an ever-present smile and the supernatural ability to stretch his arms like Mr. Fantastic or Elastigirl. Heroes and villains range from a man who can wield 3 swords to a terrifying dude with an axe for a hand. Things don't always make sense, but that's the point.
I thought the character development was rather good, as were the settings. Luffy is a charming protagonist, and both him and the people around him have interesting (if only thinly developed) backstories. There's a bit of a video game vibe to character introductions that makes them memorable, too. What's more, the artwork is not too hard to follow, either.
The story is (no pun intended) a stretch. MacGuffins abound mostly to move the plot, and some of them require more than a little suspension of disbelief. But that's offset to some degree by the fact that the execution is nevertheless a lot of fun. Clearly the writers had a blast concocting this.
The first One Piece won't win any awards for depth, but it does set the stage for one of the most beloved manga of all time. I can see the appeal.

I already feel so invested in Luffy. He is so quirky and awesome. I can't wait to continue his story!

I can see the hype. An exciting story with a lovable bunch of characters. I’m excited to get swept away in the lore and go on adventures with Luffy.
