Whee, first volume of One Piece manga. I already learned something - I always wondered how Luffy got the scar on his cheek, and I don't remember them covering that in the anime. It's fun going back and seeing the story start from the beginning. Also it's great to read it and know that there won't be any filler arcs.
I don’t know what finally possessed my brain to convince me to finally start this series, but I’m glad I did. What a fun start to what is the longest running Shonen manga. Charming art, a goofy protagonist, what’s not to love?

What can I say One Piece Is just awesome. The epic story starts here & it’s still going. We see the story of Luffy meeting Zoro & briefly Nami. A flashback first story where he acquires his straw hat.

I have had multiple friends try to convince me for years to try and read One Piece, and I finally caved. Luffy is a typical cinnamon roll main character. I think the world is very interesting with both pirates and magic. Luffy accidentally eats a devil fruit at the beginning of the story which gives him the power to stretch his limbs like Mr. Fantastic (the side effect being that he is unable to swim now). Luffy has a very welcoming found family of sorts and dreams of being a pirate. The adults around him are very protective despite some of them having less than savory ways of making a living. This made for a very nice introduction to a lot of the characters as well as Luffy and the world. I'm looking forward to continuing this journey forward. Nothing like a future pirate that can't swim to get you interested.

Finally, I am rereading this whole series, but on the published version one.
I always have a soft spot for the original trio, and of course, my boy Koby. Thinking about this volume (chapters 1-8) and the latest episodes of the anime— all of them really have gone so far in their journey.
Overall, I'm feeling super nostalgic and super emotional. One of my favourite series of all time 🫶
