A delightful and surprising meditation on the simple pleasures inside of the unexpected.

This is the story of a Russian count who returns to Russia after the revolution and is sentenced to house arrest in the Hotel Metropole.  The count is a wonderful character and the writing is done in a very lighthearted style that makes for a very pleasant read.  There isn’t a complicated plot - the book details his life over the next 40 years or so and the characters he meets.  I suspect the reality of living in Moscow during these years was significantly more horrible than this book suggests, which is my only criticism.  You will also learn a bit of Russian history as you read this but this is nicely blended into the narrative.

This is why I hate historical fiction almost always. They never include the actual history in it.

Also, I dont like how this book tries to say it's nutritious when it's all empty calories.

This book was a surprising delight. The plot is slow and subtle, which I am not normally a fan of. However, the style was beautiful and the premise unique.
