Lola At Last

The most delightful romp through self growth, sister bonds, new love and nature.

I loved this so much and hope there’s more of these unlikely Jane Austen retold heroines to come.

I absolutely loved this book!!!

Lola at Last kept me entertained on a quick weekend trip and I liked it even more than the first book, Being Mary Bennet. Lola is the wild child of five sisters in the Barnes clan. After being shipped off to boarding school after her last scandal, she’s back and ready for a fresh start… but accidentally burns down her brother in law Will’s yacht. She’s forced into a wilderness summer program to make amends and ends up embracing cutting toxic frenemies from her life and working to become the best version of herself! I loved it so much and it was very funny. Would recommend!

I loved Being Mary Bennet and couldn't wait to read this companion novel! I love that this family is based on Pride and Prejudice, with this book following Lola, a modern-day Lydia Bennet. It's so easy to forget that Lydia was only 15 years old. Yes, she was annoying and made stupid decisions, but she was a young teenager still trying to figure out who she was and who she wanted. I loved that this book highlighted this struggle while discussing how to want to be cared for and want attention without being a "mean girl" who is willing to put others to the side for attention. I also loved that Lola was forced to make this discovery and try to become a better person through a hiking camp. It was a fun combo! I love these books and can't wait to see what J.C. Peterson writes next!

Lola at Last is officially up there in my top 3 favorite YA romances! It was funny, it was sweet, it was adventurous, and it was a breath of fresh air. I loved all of the characters (especially Ezra--new book boyfriend material!), the writing style (witty and sarcastic, with a beautiful reflection of hiking and nature), and the many, many lessons learned. I am just....astounded by how much I loved this book. Absolutely a breath of fresh air!

I love Pride and Prejudice so when I saw that this was a modern retelling of Lydia Bennet's life I was thrilled to read it. I love books where there the characters grow and change but it felt like there was so much talk on changing when I just would have liked her to say it once and show off her growth as a human being. Honestly, wasn't too concerned about this but it was a little detail that nagged me. An even bigger portion of the book that was just straight-up disappointing was the love interest. It looked like Lola met a guy who was all into her new hobbies so they must be perfect together right? He was so boring! And when he basically told her she wasn't worth the drama when she was trying... boy bye. That's just an unforgivable thing to tell a person. How could you trust them after that? More hiking and friendship hangouts, less romance, and this would have been a lot better.
