Torrey Peters created such an intriguing premise for a story, I knew I had to pick it up. From the masterful title of the work and brilliantly written prose, to the wild escapades of Reese, this book was enjoyable from start to finish.

What does it mean to be a mother? The way that this novel explores transness and motherhood is so unique, and something that I hope other authors will also explore in the future.

I agree with other reviewers that the exploration of race in this book falls flat, so that is why I am taking off a star for this review. I hope to see more nuanced perspectives on this topic from trans people of color in future works that I read.

Read for the 2025 Trans Rights Readathon.

I highly value the insight this story brings into the trans community, but thats about it. There were some interesting dynamics discussed, but to center this all around a pregnancy felt super strange. I am all for discussing the complexities of a trans woman wanting to be a mother, but it felt like we were using one woman to drive conflict in a way that was harmful. All three main characters were so self destructive and annoying. Every one has redeeming qualities about themselves how are none brought up? They all felt like stereotypes. There were so many interesting experiences being shared with each individual, but as soon as the characters were brought together they were so frustrating to listen to.

Thought the characters and their dif dynamics were really compelling.

My one gripe was the analysis of race was limited. Oppression olympics theme was frustrating and I think Katrina’s character was less complex and developed
