As a mystery story - this isn't really a mystery story, and you're going to be disappointed if you treat it as one.

As a romance story - I found it kind of unsatisfying, but I think this may have been part of the point.

As a story about friendship - I think it works. Both Aza and Daisy seem likeable but also like they would be difficult to have as a best friend, for different reasons, and the book explores this dynamic in a relatively interesting way.

As a story about obsessive-compulsive disorder and germaphobia - it really works, and this is clearly where the focus lies.

I read this book when it first came out in 2017 and again in Apr 2024 in anticipation of the new HBO release. When it first came out I was living alone for the first time, a freshman in college, had just broken up with my first love- I had a completely different lens. This most recent read, I think I finally *got* it. A lot of this book is really heavy, but it’s realistic. The ending is
mildly hopeful, but again, so relatable as someone who has lived just enough life to know that it does get better.

i had to take a lot of breaks reading this because some parts regarding the MC’s mental illness were almost too relatable but am i being bold if i say this is his best book?

This book was really good, it just didn’t hit for me. I related to Aza, but I found myself skimming her monologues. I would have been obsessed with the hint of romance a few years ago, but now I found it a little insta lovey, but somehow brief at the same time. The message was there, but the mystery element was weak. In the end, this book was just too aggressively young adult for my tastes.
