Definitely a slow burn book. But it’s so authentic. The missed opportunities and stupid choices we make in the moment. How the people in our lives that leave an imprint on our hearts never truly go away.

At time this was infuriating but I love the complexity of the characters. Rainbow Rowell does an amazing job at making you love them. Towards the end, it felt like flashes and a wrap up which I wish would have taken more time. Like you took forever to get to the good part and now that we’re here you’re just flipping thru

I read this book in six hours - one single sitting. I stayed up very late to finish it. I absolutely could not put it down.

It's been a long time since I've read Rowell's work though I've enjoyed it in the past. She maintains a YA pace even in her adult writing (and this one is very adult - read:spice). She writes compelling characters and believable chemistry. The banter in this one was especially good.

the other element I appreciated in this was her treatment of non-linear timelines. This is hard to do artfully and I felt she did a great job, especially with revealing relevant history at the right moments.

this is probably not the next great American novel, but it was a craftfully written romantic comedy with tons of real life and a perfect amount of quirk infused throughout.

Huh.  I’m not quite sure what to think about this one.  I thought that the main characters were compelling and I was rooting for them; their relationship included an epistolary exchange via email and care packages that I really enjoyed.

It felt hard to find a footing in the writing.  Sometimes the emotional descriptions felt flat; at other times the MC’s communication as adults had a dramatic, teenager-y tone.  I’m pretty willing to accept suspect plotlines in friends-to-lovers romances, but even I had a hard time believing this couple’s trajectory and the “oh, look, everything turned out great!” ending.

Extra point for a VERY satisfying reference to the timeless classic “Brandy” by Looking Glass!!  🎶
