Ive read this book and the following in the series a few times. There is a gamut of emotions in the books, from anger, to love,to even forgiveness and joy. I love the uniqueness of each character and how they interacted with each other. In putting myself in the main heroines shoes, i'm not sure i could have been so forgiving or have easily adjusted as she had to the harsh new world she found herself on, as well as very different cultural customs she finds herself in.

I really enjoyed reading this tale. It was an incredible journey. I'm off to read the second book. Can't to read Wyn's story.

DNF
Well that was different. It started out good and even awesome in some places. I just couldn't take ummm the harem of men. It wasn't for me. So yeah, I stopped while I still liked it. Mind you, this book is long.

Anyhoo, yeah... just not for me.

I loved this book, and I can't wait to read the next one. I really was hoping to see more of this clan and the newest little member!

I'll state that this book was not what I was expecting. I was worried at the first 15%. It was... weird. But I liked the author's "voice." and I'm glad I stuck through the rough patch. It was different but still very entertaining. Yes, it's a very long book but I tried to image scenes that could be left out and I came up empty. My only issues where some inconsistencies with certain plots/characteristics. The flow of the story was stilted at points but I think the subject of the story made up for it. Certain scenes were confusing, I felt they could have been described or structured better. Other than those few quirks, it was a good start to the series.

The author created a spectacular world with richly-developed characters. It reads so nicely despite its length. My complaint is that although it has many (interesting) sex scenes, I don't consider them erotic. Perhaps that's my own feeble mind being unable to put myself into a scene with a drastically non-humanoid alien lover.

[SPOILER]

I also didn't dig the rape. Venom is trapped on a prison ship with dozens of other species yet doesn't have the cultural awareness that another species might not understand his mating ritual. The issue is brought up repeatedly by Lumen, in the context of her having been victimized and struggling to accept she's mated to someone who raped her. (Even though she ultimately began enjoying their sexual relationship.) Venom gradually realizes she's been harmed by his actions but then the issue becomes this shadow over their relationship. There's an omnipresent lack of trust. The entire situation made me feel unclean.

First time around I DNF'ed at around 80%- I don't know why but gave it another try and all I can say is that I finally finished this one---at almost 700 pages it was a struggle to get through it. (Not so much the length but the story)

Second read

I liked this book. The fl wasn't squeamish. So we don't get a lot of wasted time where the fl is like" oh no we can't have sex" blah blah. So the book becomes rapey. You know they will have sex. And when a author spends most of the book writing about round and round fake prudishness, I get a headache. I want to read thunderclaw's book. I been waiting for it!
