I listened to this book with Libby through my library.
I first learned of this book from a book challenge where it was posted last year. I finally got around to reading it and it was such a fun book! Zhao captured the vibe of a teen movie in the 90s with the fun characters, loving friendships, and hijinx.
Sophie and Jo are both freshmen at Wellesley College and the way that Zhao was able to capture the excitement and fear of youth at that age was so relatable and funny. Both Sophie and Jo are exploring their interests and trying to find themselves as aromantic and asexual people on the cusp of adulthood. Although all the characters were lovable, Jo was my favourite. The way that they approached problems and the anxieties that they had throughout the book were nuanced and captured what it feels like to be anxious about something without exaggerating. I also loved the dynamics between them and their family. Their moms were so supportive and her brother was exactly what I imagine a younger brother would be like.
I did identify with Sophie's type-A personality. The way that she tackled problems made me think of myself at that age and Zhao captured the weight that causes a person to walk around with well.
This was a funny and endearing read. It highlights the importance of relationships of all kinds (e.g., parent/child, friends, romantic, sibling) and will leave you feeling happy.
