One of the most emotionally difficult reads for me recently.
Incredibly impactful with elegant, beautiful writing that steadily builds to an inevitably horrific conclusion. The meandering pace, cyclical descriptions, and detached narrative language create an unsettling, powerful lasting image unlike anything I’ve ever read.
Absolutely deserving of every accolade and I highly recommend it. Please review the list of content warnings.

A meditative yet sharp short novel showing and telling the impacts of ongoing nakba and occupation on individual lives and psyches as well as the ability to process, understand, and fight back against oppression. Difficult content well employed in the narrative, violence and descriptions of violence walked the line between gratuitous/dehumanizing and so gentle as to erase the dehumanizing nature of violence. Would recommend.

I just finished this and I feel like I need to read it again.
This was a masterful novella that felt full and detailed and intricate. Every word and scene and image was considered. Each detail is important. The resulting picture is a gut punch. It's haunting and masterful work.

I loved how Shibli managed to make motes of sand have more personality than the officer. The sprinkled use of emotional language in relation to scenery was so clever.

On a general note as well this is a searing portrayal of life under occupation as well as the occupations brutality. Saying so much in such a short book is so impressive.

I wanted more because of course I did. Of course I wasn't satisfied. There is no happy ending under occupation.
The book therefore for everything it needed to.

This book provides a lot of important information about what is/has been going on in Palestine. It made me sick to my stomach, but it was absolutely a necessary read. This is going to stick with me for a very long time.
