I’m glad so many people enjoyed this one, unfortunately it wasn’t for me.

I thought the two point of views to be too disconnected to link them coherently. The second point of view was told in a “this happened, and then this happened” format, which I hate. All in all, I thought this book would have more of an impact than it actually did.

I love sad and emotional novels and yet never in my life have a read a book that caused such dread that the contents of this book settled deep in me like a stone. Current events and the books proximity to Rafah do play heavily into how impactful it was but, even without that, this novel would still evoke such strong emotions in me. The first part actually gave me nightmares of this happening to my loved ones. If anyone is wanting to read about the Palestinian experience, specifically a more historic view point, I would recommend this book. I am glad it was so short though because I don’t think I could’ve handled much more of the intensity specifically in the last two pages it really got to me. I wanted to read it twice in a row because of how short it is to fully catch everything but I think I need to take a break and read something lighter.

Hard but important to read. While reading both parts have been filled with some sense of dread - either for the inevitable thing to happen (first part), or what could happen to the protagonist of the second part and whether they can return to their home, while still experiencing minor situations (one might say details) that mirror the girl who got killed at the end of the first part.
From a writing perspective - I liked the two completely different narrative voices: the 3rd person view of the IDF soldier (confident, without much emotions/and any remorse @ his actions), and the 1st person view of an Palestinian woman from the west bank having to been grown up and live under those conditions  - her constant anxiety and neuroticism (stemming from the trauma of being occupied, oppressed, bombed, and not allowed to move freely)

(Might come back to continue to review this after i have sorted my thoughts - also trying to start and get better at reviewing)
