9/10 Stars. Finally some justice for Uhtred! Even if it is incomplete. We finally see him go back to Northumbria, go back home. He comes so close to victory, only to be defeated by the simplest of things. But it was a step in the right direction, a step to show he is still the ultimate war lord. Also cannot get enough of Aethelflaed, she is one of the best characters. A fiercely independent woman living in an extremely male dominated era. She does what she wants and it's fabulous. Love this series!

At times hilarious, (Uhtred's take on the "nailed god" and his followers) , at times repulsive yet mesmerising (the battle scenes) and a gripping story. Can't wait for the next one.

These books are always entertaining and I really enjoy this series as a whole. Although I am wondering how there can be so many future books with Uhtred being pretty old hahah

adventurous tense

Uhtred is unchanging...which feels unrealistic, super-hero-esque. And that can be comforting but I'd like to see a little...growth? I think it's going to happen given how this book ends (and a few things that happens before the end) so I'll see. I'm down for whatever if for no other reason than that I gobbled up the Netflix series and the movie is coming out on my birthday (though, as I've said, the books and the show aren't parallel.)
