A very imaginative setting, but I found the characters unlikable. As is often the case with older science fiction, I was disappointed with the representation of female characters.

It starts off a little confusing and then just sort of meanders to a “ to be continued” of sorts. A Victorian British explorer dies and finds himself resurrected on a river world with every human who has ever died and a few other non-humans. He makes a group of friends and with the help of a member of the beings who created this place, he goes on an adventure to find out the meaning of this place. It’s okay but just reads like the author was making it up as he went along, doesn’t seem like much planning before hand.
3.5 stars. This book begins with so much promise: human beings are inexplicably resurrected on a strange planet with access to an endless supply of food and water. This utopia inevitably turns dystopian as people fall back on their old prejudices and begin raping and killing. The thing that kills the promise is the unfortunate fixation on sexist language and racial essentialism. I'm not sure how this won the Hugo award but the society had made mistakes before...
