The writer managed to capture Ten's manic behavior. No small feat. On one of the Doctor Who comm, someone asked how in the future would the 10th Doctor be remembered. What would be in his "film reel"? Someone came up with the best answer : a jump cut scene where Ten goes : "No! Yes! No! Wait! No! Oh! Wait! Aha!..." and I might add makes his hair go in a thousand directions. Tucker managed to give us the reader *that* Doctor in Nightmare of Black Island. It's the closest I've read so far to Tennant's performance. The Doctor is smart and rude and completely off his rocker. And it works. Rose is a little more in the background in this caper than the other 3 books in the Ten series but has a few good scenes. All and all a good Doctor Who novel. Lots of actions, a fun and crazy Doctor and some nasty aliens.

The Nightmare of Black Island by Mike Tucker

Why I read it: I will never stop reading Doctor Who stuff, even if it’s kinda not very good.

Rating: 2/5

What I thought: Eh. It’s not terrible, but for some reason I wasn’t overly enthused by this one. It does have one heck of a twist at the end, I’ll say that much.

Maybe 3.75 but I actually think this has been my favourite DW book since the Stone Rose

It's been a while since I've rewatched any of Doctor Who with Ten and Rose, so when I pulled this book out of my TBR jar I was excited to read it, and excited to find out what the mystery was. However, it's set in Wales. I've got nothing against Wales but to start with I was a little put off.

However, it was great! There were so many unexpected little twists, the Doctor and Rose split off to do their own investigating, and the town in danger realised what was happening and joined together to help stop it. Small town unity is great to read about.

I really liked how Rose worked with the local children to find out what was happening, as a character, we know that Rose is in her early twenties, so it was good to see her communicating with children in a way that showed she understood and didn't see them as lesser due to their age. The Doctor was just The Doctor- Tucker writes the Tenth Doctor really well that I could picture David Tennant speaking the words as I read them.

Overall, it's an interesting story, with lots going on to keep the story going. You want to know what's happening as much as The Doctor and Rose do! I really enjoyed this story and it was nice to fall back into the Doctor Who world. I've missed Ten and Rose.

4/5 stars.

I really enjoyed this book as another extra story including the 10th Doctor and Rose, probably my favourite couple from Doctor Who. I really loved the idea of this novel and found it quite spooky with some scenes actually being a bit scary.

Plot: 4/5

I really enjoyed the plot in this novel, it was a different idea but one I would quite liked to have seen made into an episode on the tv. In this novel, the Doctor and Rose come face to face with a monster who is controlling the children's dreams. I found this idea quite intriguing and I liked how the monsters relied on something so normal as children's dreams and their imaginations. I also enjoyed the twist at the end, when the aliens plan didn't work quite as they wanted and the importance of the patients in the beds.

Characters: 4/5

The Doctor is very well written in this novel, he is exactly as he is in the tv series. Rose is also very similar to herself on the tv. The relationship between these two characters is great too, with the Doctor knowing just how much he needs Rose and showing just what a good team these two make when they work together.

The aliens in this novel are just as interesting but also scary as you would expect from Doctor Who. I also feel like these monsters had a very original plan to rule and this was interesting to read about.

Setting: 4/5

This novel is set in a rural Welsh village on the coast and I think this added a lot to the novel. The village was described very well in the dark and this definitely added to the eerieness of the whole book. This setting also allowed for running through woods, creepy lighthouse action and underground tunnels.

Overall: 4/5

I really enjoyed this book and it is probably one of the best Doctor Who novels I have read. I thought this was a really original and unique idea for a Doctor Who adventure. If you like Doctor Who I would really recommend this book.

Oh, I can never get enough of the 10th Doctor and Rose! In this book there's a moment when someone refers to her as his girlfriend and he doesn't even flinch. The plot concerns yet another alien menace that happens to be hiding in the United Kingdom. What are the odds? But I liked the locals and the contrast between the ordinariness they tried to maintain in their lives and the horror that surrounded them. The Doctor and Rose seem to be very much in character, and I liked how they really had to work together and persuade others to help them in order to resolve the problem.

I graded on a curve because these DW novels are usually either terrible and disappointing or fairly accurate and entertaining. Ten and Rose seemed true to form, the story had layers that weren't immediately obvious, and I thought the monsters and their motives were creepy enough not to be cheesy.

Out of character, cliched plot and aims very young. A disappointment
