I read this in 8th grade and absolutely loved this tear-jerker of a book. Definately a wonderful holiday read.

The tone of the book is very somber, but the ending was nice, if a little predictable. I liked that the chapter headings were verses from Christmas carols.

I dislike this book as a christmas story. It feels more like a cautionary tale on being an asshole and raising your children to be assholes. The christmas "spirit" in it is non-existent. Also there was som casual mentions of Hannukah and those statements came off wrong.
