It was a truly brilliant book. The structure is not very usual for me, but somehow sometimes I wanted to have more information and more stories about these people.

It is sometimes very difficult and I wanted to put away this book several times as I was filled with rage and feeling of true guilt mixed with willing to help as well as with sense if pure injustice. I admire author’s level of research and quality.

This book was incredible. It needs to be in the hands of every high school student across America. I cried- a lot. At the end of this, I was so overwhelmed with emotions that I couldn't speak. I will buy a copy of this and give it out as Christmas presents as well. If you are an American, read this.

This is my second time reading this book and I remembered why it is my favourite book of all time.

The way the lineages connect, by chance or was it destiny? The fears of different elements - water and fire, how both sisters suffered and that suffering continued on.

One of my favourite parts is Ma Akua talking Majorie out to the sea it just felt emotional and full circle for many reasons.

I need to compose my thoughts properly but I am in awe (again), what a tragic yet beautifully written book.

A heartbreaking journey through the legacy of imperialism and the slave trade from its inception through today.
