Depressing. Big time. But so well done, especially the flashbacks to the World's Fair.

Quite a sad coming of age graphic novel about repressed masculinity, fragility, and interpersonal relationships.

Although confusing at first, once I got into this book, it ended up being a very interesting read. I think this in fact is the most literary graphic novel I've ever read, not that I've read millions of graphic novels, but of the ones I've read this could really be on the list of literary masterpieces. Really it was a very sad story, following parts of the lives of two 'Jimmys' from different generations in the Corrigan family. It was touching and I was glad it ended full of hope after all kinds of sad episodes. I liked the way the story switched from present to past, to dreams to reality, although that is what was confusing in the beginning, but once used to it it does have a kind of flow. I'm sure there are all kinds of hidden messages in there that I missed and I would probably like to read it a second time at some point. Good read :)

A graphic tour de force. The art, which I admit grew on me through the book, was absolutely remarkable. His architectural style was fantastic and I loved the through that Ware put into designing the layout. The writing was also amazing. Filled with pathos but never become maudlin or sentimental. Sometimes this book was difficult but it was very worth the effort

Just not for me. I tried, I really did. I'll stick to Persepolis for my graphic novel fix.

I guess I'm just not a comics person. Nor am I one for stream of consciousness. I tend to read to have the benefit of someone else's carefully organized and edited thoughts. The nonsense and disjointedness of the whole book just didn't work for me.

From a design and layout point of view it was amazing, but the was depressing and I gave up on it. It's really nice to look at.
