There were good twists I didn't anticipate. I would have appreciated a little bit less of the main character's internal monologue as it became a bit repetitive and took away from some of the mystery for readers to solve

This is such a well-written and emotionally engaging book to start a series. I was genuinely hooked from the first sentence and tried to guess what was going to happen throughout only to be right once. Don't let the "romance" trick you though, this was a fantastic murder mystery throughout. If murder mysteries and connecting with Death were set in the world of Bridgerton. So if any of that seems like your kind of thing then I 100% recommend this book.

Literally my only gripe with this book was the romance. Personally, I thought it was a bit disjointed and didn't work with the overall theme of the book. This would have done wonderfully as a historical fantasy mystery, the romance just adds nothing to it other than 2-3 counts of implied, but unnecessary, sexual content.

Not my genre but still enjoyable enough. Predicted
Sylas being death and Percy being the murderer
from less than halfway through but this didn't spoil it too much - although I would've preferred not to have worked it out so quickly!

My three favourite genres; Murder Mystery, Horror and Supernatural Romance all in one book.
The beginning is hard to get through and I must admit I struggled to like it at first as it does read very much as a blatant YA book. Its also predictable and cheesy at times, but once you get used to it the writing style is quite endearing and overall an easy and enjoyable read.

I can't get attached to female lead. She is the most annoying character. The author tries to make her look less bad by making her victims tyrannical and deserving to die. But it's a cheap way to make your MC look like a good and innocent person. I don't like her interactions with death either. I feel like Death could've been more mysterious but he got the personality of a 17 year old. Boring.

"You must not allow yourself to be consumed so thoroughly by death. It’s not selfish to live."

I genuinely loved so much about this book. The characters all had distinct voices, and I found myself loving most of them for various reasons, even the ones who had some traits that aren't exactly pleasant. The story was eerie, it was heartfelt, it was introspective, and above all else, it kept me engaged throughout the whole thing.

Having the historical fiction elements tied in with the supernatural and topped off by a murder mystery, I went into it worried that there would be too much going on in this book for any of the storylines to be done well. I can only really think of one situation where I wish I had more context, but seeing as this is a series, it's possible it'll be touched on in the sequel. I can't wait to start the next one and let this series become my whole personality đź’•

I wasn’t sure if I was going to like this book and be in the minority… but once the plot picked up in pace and we got to know more about Signa, is when it got better for me personally.

I felt the aesthetic of the book gave me bridgerton vibes, and I did really enjoy reading how the MFC Signa changed throughout the book.

I would advise checking trigger warnings for this book as there is some dark topics featured.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed and I can see why it is popular, and I will read the sequel too.
