I’ve decided Middle Eastern fantasy is one of my favorites. The folklore of the Jinn and the different variations it takes, depending on each author’s perspective, is always fun and engaging.
This book gave me City of Brass vibes. One thing I loved about it was that there is no clear romantic arc. There might be a hint of one to come, but it was really about a group of people who come to care for each other. And that’s it. I don’t know why, but I’m kind of getting tired of unnecessary love triangles.
I loved this book and I can’t wait for the next one.

Just excellent!! A great, epic tale with great characters, and a very interesting world and magic. I loved the Arabian landscape of it too. Can't wait for the next book!

While some aspects were interesting the story itself dragged. The pacing was painfully slow and then at the end there was an influx of revelations. I would have liked less repetitive travel sequences and more of Omar's point of view.

Damn this book started off so slow but then the pace picked up and everything went to hell. One thing I loved was that the characters weren’t hardened soldiers like most fantasy books make them out to be but were flawed and soft and had a heart. Mazen’s character especially was so refreshing to read because you could see the growth of his character throughout the book. Overall, cannot wait for the second book because I need to know what happens after that ending omg.
