informative inspiring reflective slow-paced

4.5

The book follows Ai's narration of his and his father's life from his perspective interwoven with historical accounts of China's history, with the aim of sharing his life story with his son. The book largely follows a chronological timeline, with parts in the first half flicking between a historical timeline with his memories with his father. The book is honest and reads to be a true reflection of Ai's feelings towards his past. Although he does not substantially point to how extraordinary his life has been with the help of certain privileges, it is clear that his relation to his father was also a double-edged sword, with affects throughout his life. The book nicely balancing art and art criticism with historical narrative, making it a truthful account with life lessons on how one should live.
