This book gets you from the first chapter. For only 4 hours, it feels like a lot is happening.

The main character's relationship with her sister really highlights how family obligations and cultural expectations can put people in really difficult situations.

On another note, the main character's fasidious cleaning tells the reader a lot about who she is as a person.

Overall, kind of a dark read. It was really well written and I look forward to reading more from this author.

Enjoyable shorter read that pulled me in from start to finish. I like that it was told largely through little vingetes from the sister Korede's first-person point of view. I liked the sprinkling of reveals throughout that flip your assumptions at every turn. The ending moved it from a decent 4 to solid 4.5 stars for me.

The audio narration by Adepero Oduye was brilliant and helped me better connect with the setting and culture of the characters.

Actually 3.5 for me! This was something! First off I love reading a book set in Nigeria and how various aspects of Nigerian culture were infused throughout. The story is a good one, and the twist was solid. Probably predictable for some, but it was good. And the ending is a bit anti-climatic but it fits.

Korede is a well written character, and I like a lot of the side characters too. Muhtar ❤️

Overall though, it was a pretty decently paced book, and I liked the short chapters. Also the background into their childhood and things with their father was pretty good too. I’m not sure this story could’ve gone in many other directions but I feel like the last little bit fell a little bit flat and left me wanting a lot more than what was given.

So many characters in this book annoyed me. Points to Braithwaite for creating such full characters that are able to invoke such annoyance in me haha A page-turner, to say the least! And that ending 🙊🙈
